THE MIDTOWN INTERNATIONAL THEATRE FESTIVAL, SPRING: 2016
At Jewel Box Theatre @ The Workshop, 312 West 36th Street, 4TH FL. New York, NY
March 7 – 27, 2016
“What’s In Alaska” written and directed by Gloria Bess, based on a short story by Raymond Carver; and starring Danny Grumich, Collen Sproull, Anat Cogan, and Jonathan West.
This play shows a couple that has problems in their relationship. The audience sees Mary and Jack as they suck the air out of the room and each other. Mary tells Jack about her prospective employment in Alaska, but it did not help their relationship. With the aid of technology, their interaction give a realistic view of how they relate with each other when there is trouble in paradise.
Their friends have a peachy relationship that demonstrate a degree of heavy drug use, but they are more agreeable as a couple and tolerant of each other. Mary and Jack show signs of their fractured relationship in their presence. To the audience, their mood seem colder than the temperature in Alaska.
The writer’s message vibrates in the mind of the audience through words and pictures. Suffocation is not healthy for the human spirit. One doesn’t have to relocate to Alaska to experience a chill in the room when the warmth is out of the relationship between two people. What is left is a trip to the Tundra region literally and figuratively for the world to see.
